Validation of a Food Frequency Questionnaire for Determining Calcium and Vitamin D Intake by Adolescent Girls with Anorexia Nervosa

Abstract: Background-Assessing calcium and vitamin D intake becomes important in conditions associated with low bone density such as anorexia nervosa (AN). Food records (FR) that assess intake over a representative time period are used in research and sometimes clinical settings. However, compliance in adolescents can be suboptimal.

“…In addition, Marshall et al reported significant mean differences for the twenty-two-item targeted nutrient questionnaire but not for the seventy-five-item Block Kids' Food Questionnaire (16) . Four other authors found no statistically significant differences in comparison with the reference method (17,20,21,30) . For these studies the mean differences ranged from values that would not be considered clinically meaningful, ,10 mg (16) and ,20 mg (21) , to values that are approaching concern: ,66 mg (30) , (27) , USA Ca:10 n 248, 11-14 years, ethnically diverse Tools to measure calcium and/or dairy intake in children (27) (25) ,70 mg (17) and ,120 mg (20) .…”

“…52 However, although the FFQ may overestimate total intake, it is a good instrument for ranking intakes 53 as intended in our study. Moreover, Taylor et al 54 performed a study to determine the validity of a FFQ for assessing calcium and vitamin D intake in 12-to 18-year-old anorexic and healthy girls. Their results demonstrated that the FFQ was useful in maximizing the information regarding calcium and vitamin D intake in a segment of the population that is vulnerable to nutrient deficiencies.…”
