Validation of a new mass screening tool for cognitive impairment: Cognitive Assessment for Dementia, iPad version

Abstract: BackgroundWe have developed a new screening test for dementia that runs on an iPad and can be used for mass screening, known as the Cognitive Assessment for Dementia, iPad version (CADi). The CADi consists of items involving immediate recognition memory for three words, semantic memory, categorization of six objects, subtraction, backward repetition of digits, cube rotation, pyramid rotation, trail making A, trail making B, and delayed recognition memory for three words. The present study examined the reliabil… Show more

“…The CADi2 is a cognitive function test used as a primary screening tool during health checkups in local communities, and its reliability and validity have been verified [12]. This scale comprises 10 questions, and the subject is asked to answer each question with 0 or 1.…”

“…The total score is 10, and higher scores are indicative of a higher level of cognitive functions. The CADi2 was found to have a significant high correlation with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), which is used to assess cognitive status (correlation coefficient: 0.79) [12]. The degree of relationship between individuals within the community was evaluated using the method employed in a previous study [5].…”

“…The dTMT is capable of outputting sensor data that may give deeper insights into certain aspects of cognition than paper-based tests. We build upon existing digital variants of the Trail Making Test [5, 6, 7, 8, 9] by including features such as detailed timing information, pauses, and lifts that are captured by utilizing a touchscreen interface. We then use these features in a machine learning based analysis.…”
