Validation of Fluid-Structure Interaction Capabilities in US3D.

Abstract: The method used for coupling US3D to a structural solver for the purpose of simulating fluid-structure interactions (FSI) is detailed. An overview of the solver components is provided, with an explanation of the necessary modification to US3D. Component level validation is undertaken against analytic solutions for both the structure to fluid and the fluid to structure parts of the FSI capabilities. The coupled solver is used on two instructive model problems to demonstrate FSI phenomena, and a full scale tensi… Show more

“…A good example of this is the work done by Stein et al [7]. References [8][9][10][11][12][13][14] present similar CFD analyses. The CFD approaches all require extensive computation time and are configuration specific, with the accompanying need for complex grid generation and many empirical inputs to the theory.…”

“…13 It uses an orthotropic stress-strain relation to compute traction forces within the material. These tractions, along with the aerodynamic loads are then used to integrate forward the velocity and displacement of the parachute using an explicit RK3 scheme.…”

“…In non-near-wall regions, the grid deforms through a combination of rigid-body translation, rigid-body rotation, and compression. 44 The grid deformation is enforced at grid nodes, not at element centroids, which is crucial for maintaining grid quality and preventing high-frequency instabilities in the grid.…”
