Validation of hemoglobin estimation using hemocue

Abstract: As there are limitations expressed for both the methods in accurately estimating Hb, it is difficult to decide whether one is an overestimate or the other an underestimate. By virtue of the principle involved in estimating Hb, cyanmethemoglobin method may be taken as an indirect indicator of iron status. However, it is not clear whether such a principle is involved in estimating Hb by Hemocue. Therefore, these two methods need to be further validated against a sensitive and specific indicator for iron status l… Show more

“…[26][27] Bhaskaram et al [26] reported that the overestimation of hemoglobin concentration by HemoCue method was 1.19 gm/dl (CI: 0.98-1.40), while Kapil et al [27] reported that HemoCue method overestimated the hemoglobin levels by 1.5 gm/dl in capillary blood samples as compared to the standard cyanmethemoglobin method.…”

“…Haemoglobin (Hb) estimation was performed using cyanmethemoglobin method 24 . Malaria anaemia was defined as haemoglobin <11 g/dL in the presence of microscopically detectable asexual parasitaemia, while severe malaria anaemia was defined as Hb <5 g/dL, with P. falciparum parasitaemia of >250,000 parasites/µl.…”

“…After that, 50 μL KCN (10% w/v) and 50 μL potassium ferricyanide (2% w/v) were directly mixed and the color was measured at 540 nm. The standard curve was constructed using the standard cyanmethemoglobin solutions in different concentrations (Bhaskaram, et al, 2003).…”
