Validation of pain catastrophizing scale on breast cancer survivor

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, with a high rate of survival. 1 Therefore, a big amount of breast cancer survivors (BCS) must face sequelae of this disease and symptoms which may affect negatively their lives. 2,3 Between them, chronic pain can affect up to 30% of BCS 10 years after treatment, 4 reducing quality of life. 5 Therefore, its management is an important factor in the quality of life and in the rehabilitation treatment in BCS. 2,6 Chronic pain in this population has been… Show more

“…We also examined the convergent validity of FACS, by assessing its relationship with the PCS. In previous studies, the Spanish version showed a moderate correlation with the PCS (r = 0.49 to 0.53) [ 39 , 41 ], and the Serbian and Turkish versions showed a high correlation (r = 0.77 and r = 0.68 respectively) [ 14 , 40 ]. The high correlation between the FACS-Fr/CF and PCS-CF (r = 0.72; p < 0.005) was very close to the Serbian and Turkish versions.…”

“…Pain catastrophizing was ascertained using the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), the sum of 13 items indicating the degree they experience thoughts and feelings that occur during pain episodes on a 5-point scale with 0 (not at all) to 4 (all the time) 33 . In the sample, the PCS demonstrated good internal consistency ( α = .93).…”

“…Pain is one of the most feared and persistent clinical symptoms of cancer, which can occur in people at an early stage, but also several years after survival or cessation of treatment. It is estimated that up to 30% of women with breast cancer suffer from chronic pain, even ten years after treatment [5]. The prevalence of cancer pain is high, so it should not be underestimated and should be addressed from the beginning of its course, not only if it is severe, because patients suffering from pain respond less well to cancer treatment.…”
