Validation of questionnaires to assess quality of life related to fecal incontinence in children with anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung's disease

Abstract: Objective:Surgical treatment of anorectal malformations (ARMs) and Hirschsprung's disease (HD) leads to alterations in bowel habits and fecal incontinence, with consequent quality of life impairment. The objectives were to create and validate a Questionnaire for the Fecal Incontinence Index (FII) based on the Holschneider score, as well as a Questionnaire for the Assessment of Quality of Life Related to Fecal Incontinence in Children and Adolescents (QQVCFCA), based on the Fecal Incontinence Quality of Life.Me… Show more

“…The major causes of fecal incontinence reported in this study were anorectal malformations and spinal cord anomalies. The two groups of malformations have been variously documented as the leading indications for referral to pediatric surgeons of patients with fecal incontinence [1,[3][4][5]. Anorectal malformations, occurring in a spectrum, are commonly associated with fecal incontinence at the upper end of the spectrum.…”

“…Other important causes include treatment for Hirschsprung disease, sacral agenesis, trauma, and tumors [1]. In pediatric colorectal practice, fecal incontinence occurs in 10 to 60% of patients who have had surgery for anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung disease [2][3][4][5].…”

“…Fecal incontinence is a challenging problem in pediatric surgical practice as it may complicate surgery for the two most common colorectal conditions treated in the specialty, i.e., anorectal malformation and Hirschsprung disease [1]. Fecal incontinence occurs in 25 to 50% of children who have undergone surgery for anorectal malformation [2][3][4]. Fecal incontinence is commoner in patients with anorectal malformation that is associated with poorer prognosis [5][6][7][8].…”

“…Fecal incontinence is a much larger problem than reported [9], and it is associated with impairment of several domains of quality of life measures [3,13]. The impact on the quality of life is similar in patients treated either for anorectal malformation or Hirschsprung disease [3]. It is, thus, important to manage pediatric fecal incontinence appropriately and adequately to improve the quality of life of patients.…”

“…As for the Portuguese language, our group previously validated the Fecal Continence Index (ICF) questionnaire and the Questionnaire for Assessment of Quality of Life Related to Fecal Continence in Children and Adolescents (QQVCFCA). 7 This work was developed with the purpose of applying the ICF and QQVCFCA questionnaires in patients with ARM attending a tertiary center of pediatric surgery. We will thus be able to know more about the profile of patients and their conditions, and to start using these tools in clinical practice.…”
