Validation of Soil Survey Estimates of Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity in Major Soils of Puerto Rico

Abstract: Ranges or “classes” of probable saturated hydraulic conductivity values (Ksat) are listed for all soil series in USDA-NRCS Soil Survey reports. Listed values are not measured, but rather estimated from other soil properties using a pedotransfer function (PTF). To validate the PTF, we compared estimated Ksat classes with measured values in various horizons of nine major soil series of Puerto Rico. For each horizon, a minimum of 9 and usually 16 Ksat measurements were made with Guelph permeameters near locations… Show more

“…K sat is a critical variable affecting the hydrology and acid export dynamics of drained ASS [ 22 ]. In near surface of ASS, although K sat values can be estimated from correlated soil properties, such as texture, bulk density, organic matter, particle size distribution, and structure descriptions [ 23 ], the pore size distribution and connectivity of macropores can affect solute flux pathways; therefore, the main transport pathway of acidic soluble materials to drainage systems in soils with macropores in the sulfuric horizon is by saturated water flow [ 24 , 25 ].…”

“…Infiltration capacities for undisturbed soils in dry and wet environments in the northeastern Caribbean are around 45 to 60 mm hr -1 and 30 to 240 mm hr -1 , respectively (figs. 3a-b) (Juliá et al, 2021;Mclaughlin, 2019;Ramos Scharrón, 2018). In the USVI and PR, the 60-min rainfall intensity with a 1-to 5-year recurrence interval is about 35 to 55 mm hr -1 for dry areas and 65 to 85 mm hr -1 for wet areas (Bonnin et al, 2006).…”

“…The paper entitled "Validation of Soil Survey Estimates of Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity in Major Soils of Puerto Rico" [7], by Fernando Juliá, Victor Snyder, and Miguel Vazquez, examines ranges or "classes" of probable saturated hydraulic conductivity values (K sat ) listed for all soils in the USDA-NRCS Soil Survey reports, which were determined using a pedotransfer function (PTF) rather than direct measurements. To validate the PTF, the paper compares the estimated Ksat classes with measured values in various horizons of nine major soil series of Puerto Rico.…”
