Validation of specific questionnaires to assess nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in a French population

Abstract: The modified-PUQE and NVP-QOL scores provided valid indices for assessing NVP severity and alterations in quality of life. Owing to its simplicity, the modified-PUQE score might be used routinely among women experiencing NVP in the first trimester of pregnancy.

“…Recent studies show that over one‐third of pregnant women in the United States used one or more CAM therapies in the previous year 39 . The prevalence of CAM use among Scottish, French, and Canadian women with NVP or HG is 63% (Pallivalappila et al 22 ), 50.4% (Dochez et al 40 ), and 61.2% (Hollyer et al 25 ), respectively. Although there is no study on the prevalence of CAM use among pregnant women with HG in Turkey, most participants (84%) in this study stated that they used at least one modality of CAM during pregnancy.…”

“…We used the Japanese version 29 of the 24‐item Pregnancy‐Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUQE‐24), 30 which is a self‐reported measure of nausea and vomiting in the last 24 h. The PUQE‐24 consists of three items (nausea, vomiting, and retching) with a 5‐point Likert scale. Based on the INV, 17 the original PUQE 18 measured the daily number of vomiting episodes, duration of nausea in hours per day, and number of retching episodes per 12 h. Ebrahimi et al 30 modified the scale to measure symptoms over the last 24 h. The PUQE is widely used in many countries 21,31–34 …”

“…There are 2 confounding factors that affect the sleep pattern either nauseating pregnant women want to sleep most of the day and night or it may be considered a side effect of antiemetics like antihistamines [10]. As a result of that, the authors summarized that the 24-hour model is valid to assess the severity of NVP in the first trimester [11].…”
