Background: Knowing about prenatal attachment is crucial because it plays a significant role in pregnant women and their babies' health. Healthcare providers, particularly midwives, need to understand the concept of attachment between mother and unborn baby. However, surrogate terms to apply the concept of maternal-fetal attachment are found, and ambiguity on the definition remains.Objective: To provide a more precise definition of the concept of maternal-fetal attachmentMethod: The Walker and Avant's concept analysis approach was applied.Results: The attributes of maternal-fetal attachment include (i) having a positive emotion, (ii) paying attention to the physical progress of the fetus and mothers themselves, (iii) having a reciprocal interaction with the baby, (iv) monitoring and imaging the unborn baby, and (v) having a desire to protect her unborn baby from harm and increase her health practices. Maternal-fetal attachment is the affection relationship, desire for protection, building the interaction, and the emotional tie between the mother and her unborn baby during the pregnancy. This personal connection is developed, mainly when the quickening is present during the late stage of pregnancy. Maternal-fetal attachment creates an emotional relationship with the unborn baby and leads the mother to express it with behavior.Conclusion: This concept analysis provides new insight into the maternal-fetal attachment concept used for nurses and midwives in their practice.

Increased maternal fetal attachment (MFA) is associated to improved health practices. A tool to measure MFA within an Arab cultural context was developed to help health care providers identify and help women with low MFA. Muller's 21-item Prenatal Attachment Inventory (PAI) was translated from English into Arabic and tested on 250 pregnant Arab women in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to measure its psychometric properties and appropriateness within an Arab cultural context. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted in two phases. First, the tool was translated using the Universal Translation Approach and assessed for content validity. In this phase there were four new items added to the original tool and their validity was tested in the second phase. In the second phase, the tool was tested on the study population, descriptive statistics were developed, association tests were used to explore associations between demographic variables and MFA, factor analysis was conducted and reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Associations between MFA and maternal variables were found such as downloading an application to follow the baby's growth, planning to breastfeed the baby and parity. The Arabic tool could serve Arab-speaking countries and help researchers explore new associations between MFA and the social determinants of health for Arab mothers and babies. Maternal-fetal attachment (MFA), a woman's relationship with and affiliative behaviors toward her unborn child, has been linked to near-term infant physical and developmental outcomes. However, further longitudinal research is needed to understand whether the impact of MFA extends past the earliest years of life. The current study explored relationships between MFA and child socioemotional competence and behavior problems at age 3 and whether parenting stress mediated the association between MFA and child outcomes. Data were collected from 221 primarily Black/African-American mothers who completed a scale of MFA during pregnancy. Mothers reported on parenting stress at infant age 7 months and reported on child socioemotional competence and problem behaviors at child age 3 years. In path analyses, MFA was directly associated with child socioemotional competence at age 3 years, but an indirect association between MFA and socioemotional competence via parenting stress was not significant. We also observed a significant indirect association between lower MFA and child internalizing behavior problems via parenting stress that was related to maternal dissatisfaction regarding interactions with her child. Findings suggest that assessing MFA may serve as a means to identify dyads who would benefit from support to promote individual health outcomes.
