“…There may be reason to interpret officers’ lower endorsement of OD response efforts as a sign of professional burnout and compassion fatigue. First and foremost, the endorsement of experiences such as “sense of hopelessness working with clients,” “feel like a ‘failure’ in work,” and “sense of worthlessness associated with work” have been validated as indicators of compassion fatigue in studies in other professional and cultural contexts ( Adams et al, 2006 ; Sun et al, 2016 ). Low scores on our exploratory endorsement scale may be indicators of these same symptoms of compassion fatigue implicitly manifesting in responses to the somewhat similar yet differently worded prompts.…”

“…Moreover, secondary trauma and job burnout were associated with compassion fatigue in these emergency department employees. This scale demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency reliabilities in all four groups (0.87, 0.90, 0.87, and 0.95, respectively; Sun et al, 2016).…”

“…The scale consists of 13 items that are scored using a 5‐point Likert scale from 1 ( never ) to 5 ( always ). The scale included the following item: “I have experienced intrusive thoughts after working with especially difficult clients/patients.” Sun, Hu, Yu, Jiang, and Lou (2016) proposed that the Compassion Fatigue Short Scale demonstrated excellent constructs and cross‐validation. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed that all fit indices of the two‐factor model were satisfactory.…”
