Validation of the core elements of perioperative nursing

Abstract: The results of this study can be used as an initial step when constructing an instrument for measuring the nursing care intensity in perioperative settings. In the future, the instrument may provide objective evidence of nursing care intensity and thus facilitate resource allocation. A further significance of this study lies in its potential to make perioperative nursing visible, so the nursing outcomes may be evaluated and proved.

“…This result showed that the OTN's formal external responsibility was to control that everything was checked before surgery to ensure patient care takes place, which is the core of perioperative nursing (Rauta, Salanterä, Nivalainen, & Junttila, ). The interesting observation in this study was that the OTNs took overall responsibility in the surgical team prior to planning the patient's positioning on the operating table and confirmed the positioning before preoperative preparation.…”

“…These elements were identified in an earlier study by Rauta et al. () and were observed to demonstrate the core of perioperative nursing. We argue that both quantitative and qualitative care needs are captured in these core elements, in accordance with the suggestion of Morris et al.…”

“…The fundamentals in systematic safety work are to identify and reduce adverse events to minimize patient suffering and preventable injuries (Rutberg, Borgstedt‐Risberg, Gustafson, & Unbeck, ). Surgical patients are exposed to several risks during surgery; risk of surgical site infection due to a planned break in skin integrity and risk of physical injury due to surgical positioning, electricity, chemicals and transfers (Rauta, Salantera, Nivalainen, & Junttila, ). A large proportion of these surgical complications are avoidable, which was shown when the World Health Organization (WHO) surgical safety checklist was implemented, after which mortality was almost halved and complications were significantly reduced.…”

“…The collection of specimens is common during surgical procedures, aiming to verify or support the patient's diagnosis (Rauta et al, ). The OT nurse is responsible for handling these specimens; an error can endanger the possibility of diagnosing the patient and planning further medical treatment.…”
