Validation of the German version of the Schedule of Attitudes Toward Hastened Death (SAHD–D) with patients in palliative care

Abstract: Validation of the SAHD-D illustrated good discriminant validity, confirming that a desire to hasten death is a construct separate from depression, anxiety, or physical state. The unidimensionality of the SAHD could not be reproduced. Our findings support the multifactorial interdependencies on DHD and suggest that the SAHD-D should be refined by considering actual wishes, general attitudes, and options of patients.

“…For example, the task of responding to 20 items may be exhausting for some patients [10, 12, 13]. Furthermore, while a clinically defined cut-off score for “high” desire to die has been proposed previously [13], a score for predicting the risk of a WTHD has yet to be established.…”

“…24 Transcultural adaptations and validations of the SAHD have since been conducted in Greece, 25 South Korea, 13 Spain 15 and Germany. 26 The instrument has also been used in a sample of patients in Taiwan, 27 although this Taiwanese version has yet to be formally validated. The different versions of the SAHD have shown adequate internal consistency (Table 3).…”

“…At our department, we have performed quite a few research projects in recent years on the wish towards hastened death. [14][15][16][17] We have validated the Schedule of Attitude toward Has ten Death (SAHD), we have looked for the con nection between the wish towards hasten death and the will to live, we have asked professionals regarding their reaction towards patients ask ing for this, and, currently, we are establishing a training program for professionals.…”
