Validation of the Korean version of visual analogue scale for irritable bowel syndrome questionnaire for assessment of defecation pattern changes

Abstract: PurposePatients often complain of change of defecation pattern and it is necessary to quantify their symptoms. To quantify symptoms, use of questionnaire is ideal, so we adopted a simple and easily writable visual analogue scale for irritable bowel syndrome questionnaire (VAS-IBS). “…According to ROME IV, IBS is characterized by the change in shape and consistency of more than one fourth of the stools in the last 3 months (10). By difference to Hong Yeol Yoo et al (9) who developed the Korean version of the VAS-IBS, we observed that most of the patients had no inconvenience to answer to Bristol stool scale item, even if it was to differentiate between intermediary stool shapes (answers between 3 and 5).…”

“…Considering that IBS is the most common biopsychosocial disorder having a multifactorial pathogenesis (Drossman, 2006), this questionnaire should be regarded as a one-dimensional tool. Therefore, Alpha if Item Deleted was used to assess the homogeneity after item reduction, the Cronbach's alpha for validity (a minimum coefficient of .70 is required, but not higher than .90) (Norman and Cairney, 2015; Polit and Hungler, 1989), whereas intraclass correlation for reproducibility (Yoo et al, 2018) (Table 1).…”
