Validation of the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form in a population of frail elders without disability. Analysis of the Toulouse Frailty Platform population in 2013

Abstract: The MNA-SF appeared to be a validated and effective tool for malnutrition screening in frail elders. Implementing this tool in clinical routine should contribute to improving the screening of malnourished frail individuals.

“…Malnutrition significantly influences the development of frailty because weight loss leads to weakness, exhaustion, slow walking speed and low physical activity—hence, nutritional screening is highly important in frail individuals (Lilamand et al, 2015; Artaza-Artabe et al, 2016). Hypoalbuminemia is a marker of malnutrition associated with a loss of muscle mass and is also a prognostic factor for mortality in the elderly population (Cabrerizo et al, 2015).…”

“…However, when the MNA-SF indicates 'at risk of malnutrition' or 'malnourished', further assessment by the full version is needed to confirm the diagnosis. Research shows the MNA has strong sensitivity, specificity and predictive value for malnutrition [13,14,16]. Several of the items in the MNA scale are however likely to have a different meaning in a dialysis cohort as compared to a more general population, such as the items on protein intake, fluid intake or consumption of fruit and vegetables.…”

“…Malnutrition is an acute, subacute or chronic state of nutrition in which varying degrees of overnutrition or undernutrition, with or without inflammatory activity, result in a change in body composition and diminished function (1,2) . Malnutrition, particularly undernutrition, is a common problem in older people (3)(4)(5)(6) . Malnutrition negatively impacts on overall health status, morbidity and mortality (7,8) .…”
