Validation of the multi-attitude suicide tendency scale in adolescent samples

Abstract: The present study extended research on the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Multi‐Attitude Suicide Tendency scale (MAST). A mixed sample of 215 adolescents, aged 15 to 18 years, participated in the study. Exploratory principal‐components analysis of the 30 MAST items provided support for the four‐factor structure of the scale: attraction toward and repulsion by life and death. The MAST subscales showed satisfactory levels of internal consistency. Specific and subset of the MAST subscales wer… Show more

“…If given the choice, they would opt to leave their suffering lives more than those who had not been exposed to as much violence. The high association found between exposure and repulsion to life is noteworthy since it was to be the factor most strongly associated with suicidal attempts, likelihood of suicide, and suicide risk (Osman, 1994). In addition, those who have recently witnessed a great deal of violence at home reported lower attraction to life.…”

“…However, the RD subscale failed to perform as expected. In a subsequent study with an adolescent sample (Osman et al, 1994), internal consistency was supported and evidence of strong validity for all subscales of the MAST was found, again with the exception of RD. Comparisons were made between psychiatrically hospitalized youth and high school student controls.…”

“…First, the MAST would be as valid when used with non-White individuals as it has been demonstrated to be with predominantly White samples. Second, the factor structure reported in previous research (Hagstrom & Gutierrez, 1998;Osman et al, 1993;Osman et al, 1994) could be fit to the data from a racially/ethnically diverse sample of university students.…”

“…Several recent studies suggest that analysis and interpretation of the MAST subscales are facilitated by reverse scoring, which was done for this study ( e.g., Hagstrom & Gutierrez, 1998;Osman et al, 1994) . Reliability and related validity for the subscale scores have been reported to be quite acceptable, with coefficient alpha estimates ranging from .74 to .91 ( Orbach, Mikulincer, King, Cohen, & Stein, 1997;Osman et al, 1994). Each subscale score was computed as a mean of the responses on that factor ( Orbach et al, 1991) .…”
