Validation of the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire Short Form (MPQ-SF) for use in the context of international education

Abstract: The Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ) is one of the most widely used instruments for measuring individuals’ intercultural competences. The original version consists of 91 items, divided into five subscales, and has been shown to predict attitudes, behavior, and outcomes in a variety of intercultural contexts. “…Given this, much attention has been given to what traits or personal attributes are better able to adjust to intercultural situations (Leung et al, 2014 ). Van der Zee and van Oudenhoven’s Multicultural Personality model (2000) continues to be one of the most popular and robust models used to examine the relationship between personality traits and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in intercultural situations (Hofhuis et al, 2020a ; Matsumoto & Hwang, 2013 ; Ponterotto, 2014 ). The model defines multicultural effectiveness as “success in the fields of professional effectiveness, personal adjustment and intercultural interactions” (Van der Zee & van Oudenhoven’s, 2000 , p.293).…”

“…Confirmatory factor analysis showed an acceptable fit of the data to the five-factor model (RMSEA = .07; chi-square/df = 3.28). Previous research showed good reliability of the subscales, with reliability coefficients ranging from .60 to .85 (Hofhuis et al, 2020;Korol, 2017;Leone et al, 2005;Summerfield et al, 2021). Reliability coefficients and other descriptive parameters of the MPQ-SF are presented in Table 1.…”
