Validation of the Quality of Life Multiple Myeloma Module Questionnaire (QLQ‐MY20) in Portuguese myeloma patients

Abstract: Objective The aim of this study was the validation of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer's Multiple Myeloma Module (QLQ‐MY20) in Portuguese myeloma patients. Methods A total of 213 Portuguese patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma participated in this study and were assessed with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer's (EORTC) Questionnaire C30 (QLQ‐C30), the EORTC Multiple Myeloma Module (QLQ‐MY20), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the… Show more

“…Four validation studies highlighted potential ceiling effects for the BI subscale. No issues with item reliability (Cronbach’s alpha) were identified for the multi-item scales [ 10 , 17 , 25 27 , 29 , 30 ]. Test-retest reliability was assessed in one article [ 25 ]; all four QLQ-MY20 subscales had high test-retest reliability (ICC ≥ = 0.85).…”

“…Test-retest reliability was assessed in one article [ 25 ]; all four QLQ-MY20 subscales had high test-retest reliability (ICC ≥ = 0.85). Two articles assessing factor analysis were inconsistent with one showing acceptable fit [ 25 ] and one suggesting item reduction in the SE subscale [ 27 ].…”

“…Module 25,26 The original version of the Multiple Myeloma Module (QLQ-MY) consists of 20 items that assess the impact of MM and its treatment on patients. Questions focus on disease symptoms (MYDS; 6 items), side-effects of treatment (MYSE; 10 items), future perspective (MYFP; 3 items), and body image (MYBI; 1 item), using a 4-point Likert scale.…”

“…Higher scores on the symptom scales reflect a greater number of symptoms, while on the functional scale/ item, higher scores reveal better future prospects and body image. The Portuguese QLQ-MY version [35], used in this study, comprises 17 of the 20 original items (MYSE contains less 3 items) distributed among the same four scales, with good internal consistency (MYDS: α = 86; MYSE: α = 0.68; MYFP: α = 91). Cronbach's alphas in the present study were 0.86 for MYDS, 0.68 for MYSE and 0.95 for MYFP.…”
