Validation of the OMNI vocal effort scale in the treatment of adductor spasmodic dysphonia

Abstract: Objectives To establish the validity of the OMNI Vocal Effort Scale (OMNI‐VES) for resistance exercise, a single‐question pictorial scale, in voice‐related perceived exertion. Additionally, the study aimed to assess the role of the OMNI‐VES as an outcome measurement in the treatment of adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD). Methods A prospective validation study was conducted on 226 participants. The case group was comprised of 178 patients receiving botulinum toxin (BTX) injections for ADSD and 48 controls with… Show more

“…It found that although QOL had improved for ADLD patients undergoing BoNT-A treatment, they still spend a significant proportion of each treatment cycle with a reduced QOL [123]. Shoffel-Havakuk et al [124] established the validity of the OMNI Vocal Effort Scale (OMNI-VES) for rating perceived voice-rating perception in patients with ADLD and concluded that it could be used to evaluate response for BoNT-A injection treatment. Interestingly, only a weak correlation was found between the OMNI-VES and the more widely circulated Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) scores in a case group of 178 patients.…”

“…Voice assessment was performed during 4 different stimulation settings: left thalamic stimulation only, right thalamic stimulation only, bilateral stimulation, and no stimulation. For each setting, a patient perception test (OMNI -Vocal Effort Scale (OMNI-VES) [7]) and an investigator perception test (Unified Spasmodic Dysphonia Rating Scale (USDRS) [8]) were used. All voice testing was performed in a double-blinded fashion.…”

“…The OMNI-VES is a validated patient perception test for rating of voice-related perceived exertion in patients with SD. It is a simple single question test with a scale ranging from 0 to 10 [7]. All patients scored their voices in a blinded fashion.…”

“…23 The OMNI-VES is a singlequestion and easily understood scale with reported ease of completion and high responsiveness. 22 The CPIB and its General Short Form (CPIB-10), allows respondents to rate the extent their communication disorder interferes in various situations on a 4-point Likert scale. 23,24 The objective of this study was twofold.…”
