Validation of the SF-36 in Jamaicans with sickle-cell disease

Abstract: Quality-of-life (QOL) measurements are becoming a vital part of health outcome appraisal. Sickle-cell disease (SCD) places a substantial burden on those afflicted. No QOL measure has been validated for use in Jamaica. The SF-36 version 2 was administered to two samples of patients with SCD: the 'Cohort' (n = 233), and the 'Main' samples (n = 256). All patients were also administered the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-Bref), Flanagan's Quality-of-Life Scale (QOLS), and the UCLA Lonelines… Show more

“…Possible score ranges are 27-116; 8-41; 9-45; and 10-30 for the overall score, role limitations, mental health and physical health dimensions, respectively. In previous research in Jamaicans with SCD, the Cronbach's alpha values for each subscale in the same order were 0.65, 0.86, 0.84 and 0.86 (Asnani, Lipps, & Reid, 2009b).…”

“…Principal components analysis of the SF-36 using data collected from persons with SCD in Jamaica has shown the clustering of items around three dimensions: "Physical Health", "Mental Health" and "Role Limitations" (Asnani, Lipps, & Reid, 2007). Possible score ranges are 27-116; 8-41; 9-45; and 10-30 for the overall score, role limitations, mental health and physical health dimensions, respectively.…”

“…31 In adults with SCD, HRQoL was previously assessed using the SF-36 in large clinical studies, 12,32 and it has been validated against 2 other quality-of-life measures in SCD patients. 33 The SF-36 Health Survey consists of 36 items that cover 8 sections consisting of physical functioning; role limitations due to physical health, bodily pain, general health, vitality, and social functioning; and role limitations due to emotional problems and mental health. The scores from the 8 sections are combined into 2 summary scores;…”

“…The importance of the CHQ-PF50 and SF-36 questionnaires and the results of the individual scales on the actions that should be taken for pediatric and adult patients with SCD have been reported. 10,[16][17][18][19][20][21] However, there is little published data on HRQoL in HU-treated pediatric and adult patients with SCD. 15,[22][23][24] HU treatment benefits include reduced frequency of acute sickle cell pain and acute chest syndrome, reduced need for blood transfusions and hospitalizations, and possibly improved survival.…”
