Validation of the Short-Form Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLS-SF12) and Its Determinants among People Living in Rural Areas in Vietnam

Abstract: Background: Health literacy (HL) is an important factor in improving health inequalities in poor and marginalized groups. Assessing comprehensive HL is critical. In this study, we validated the use of a comprehensive short-form HL survey tool (HLS-SF12) and examined the determinants of HL among people in rural areas. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in July 2019 on 440 people residing in mountainous areas in Vietnam. Health literacy was measured using the HLS-SF12. “…The current study shows the digital healthy diet literacy (DDL) scale is a brief, valid, and reliable tool with satisfactory construct, criterion, and convergent validity, with a high level of internal consistency reliability, and with no floor or ceiling effect. The psychometric properties of the expanded DDL domain of HL were similar to the HLS-SF12 scale [ 40 , 41 , 53 ] and e-healthy diet literacy (e-HDL) scale [ 54 ]. Moreover, the performance of the DDL scale was similar in medical and nursing students.…”

“…Health literacy (HL) was evaluated using a 12-item short-form health literacy questionnaire (HLS-SF12) that has been widely used in Asian countries [ 40 ], including in Vietnam [ 41 , 42 , 43 ]. The HLS-SF12 questionnaire was used to measure comprehensive health literacy, including four stages of information processing (e.g., accessing, understanding, appraising, and applying), and three domains of health (e.g., health care, disease prevention, and health promotion) [ 44 , 45 ].…”

“…Health literacy (HL) was measured using the 12-item short form of the health literacy questionnaire (HLS-SF12), which has been validated in general populations in Asia [30], and in Vietnam [43]. Participants rated their perceived difficulty of each item on 4-point Likert scales (1 = very difficult, 2 = difficult, 3 = easy, and 4 = very easy).…”

“…Sykes et al [87] give insights on health literacy on the topic of infertility in "Multidimensional eHealth Literacy for Infertility", considering the concept of eHealth literacy in individuals and couples in relation to infertility. In "Validation of the Short-Form Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLS-SF12) and Its Determinants among People Living in Rural Areas in Vietnam", Duong et al [88] validate the use of a comprehensive short-form health literacy (HL) survey tool (HLS-SF12) in Vietnam. The study by Chakraverty et al [89], "Gender-Specific Aspects of Health Literacy: Perceptions of Interactions with Migrants among Health Care Providers in Germany", explores the views of health care professionals on how gender affected their interactions with migrant patients.…”
