Validation of the Sydney Hamstring Origin Rupture Evaluation (SHORE)

Abstract: Aims To validate the Sydney Hamstring Origin Rupture Evaluation (SHORE), a hamstring-specific clinical assessment tool to evaluate patient outcomes following surgical treatment. Methods A prospective study of 70 unilateral hamstring surgical repairs, with a mean age of 47.3 years (15 to 73). Patients completed the SHORE preoperatively and at six months post-surgery, and then completed both the SHORE and Perth Hamstring Assessment Tool (PHAT) at three years post-surgery. The SHORE questionnaire was validated th… Show more

“…Patient-reported outcome measures and clinical outcome measures (COMs) are important tools for evaluation of the results of surgical treatment, and the heterogeneity of outcome measures leads to difficulties in comparison of different studies and therefore in generalization of the results. To date, only two clinical assessment tools have been validated specifically for outcomes of hamstring repair, PHAT [ 22 ] and SHORE [ 39 ]. These outcome measures are recently developed and validated specifically for evaluation of hamstring injuries, and there are only limited amount of studies that have used these tools.…”

“… 6 The PHAT, SHORE, and PHIQ were designed specifically to assess patients who sustained proximal hamstring injuries. 8 , 16 , 29 Of these, the PHAT and SHORE are the only validated proximal hamstring–specific PROMs. 8 , 16 However, the SHORE was validated by correlating its functional outcome scoring to that of the PHAT.…”

“…5 Typically, surgery is recommended for patients with a complete three tendon tear or those with two tendon tears with more than 2 cm of retraction. 6 The aim of surgery is to achieve an objectively and subjectively restored hamstring muscle in terms of strength and function, leading to a patient who is satisfied with their outcome. 7 A restored muscle should also reduce the risk of injury recurrence and enable the patient to return to sport.…”
