“…With the exception of the third molars, permanent dentition completed its development between 12 and 14 years of age. Third molars are estimated to develop between the ages of 15.7 and 23.3 years, and because this timeframe intercrosses the legal age of 18, they can serve as a discriminant tool to distinguish adults from minors 1 3 , 5 .…”

“…Over the last years, I 3M was successfully validated worldwide, in Europe 2 , 13 23 , Africa 1 , 24 27 , Asia 5 , 28 31 , America 3 , 32 36 and Oceania 37 . Overall, I 3M had considerable reliability among all countries, however, to date, this method is not validated for a Portuguese sample.…”

“…A study by Mwesigwa et al 29 on 1021 patients in Uganda, also confirmed that this is a valid method for determining age between 10 and 22 years. On the other hand, several authors determined that the Cameriere method applied to the wisdom teeth was valid for determining 18 years of age in different populations in the Dominican Republic 30 , Brazil 31 , Japan 32 , or Sardinia 33 . The degree of mineralisation of the wisdom teeth depends on and is specific to the studied population 34 .…”

“…1 The development of the third molars is generally evaluated between the ages of 13 and 23 years, and the almost apexification of the third molar roots may be regarded as one of the relevant evidence for determining whether a person is older than 18 years, and as well as an adult. [7][8][9][10] In 2008, Cameriere et al 11 studied a novel technique for estimating adult age on panoramic radiographs (OPTs), based on the proportion of standardized measurements of the open apex and length of the third molar, known as the third molar maturity index (I 3M ). A cutoff value of I 3M = 0.08 was determined to identify a person juvenile or adult and indicated high sensitivity and specificity.…”

“…The accuracy of the I 3M in age estimation for other populations has been conducted by OPTs to date 3,4,7–34 . However, OPTs have disadvantages, such as distortion, magnification, and lack of cross-sectional data, and are limited in ensuring the accuracy of a 3-dimensional (3D) object.…”
