Validation of the Urban Walkability Perception Questionnaire (UWPQ) in the Balearic Islands

Abstract: Within the context of promoting the “healthy routes” program, the aim of this study was to validate the urban walkability perception questionnaire (UWPQ) in the Balearic Islands to determine the characteristics of the urban environment that promote walking among the population. The UWPQ measures pedestrian facilities, infrastructures of the environment, perception of safety and a participant’s general opinion. “…To assess the reliability of the questionnaire, Cronbach’s alpha [ 81 ], was used, evaluating only in terms of internal consistency as suggested by [ 65 , 67 ], applying the item covariance method of the dimensions applied to the Likert scale questions from the RSPQ data applied to 736 drivers. After showing the validity of the questionnaire, its reliability was also shown by Cronbach’s alpha [ 82 ], for which 0.80 is considered a good score and 0.90 is excellent [ 83 ].…”

“…There are also varying perspectives when evaluating the level of walkability. For subjective evaluation, common methods include questionnaires and interviews to gauge pedestrians' subjective perceptions of the built environment [33][34][35][36][37]. Gorrini et al conducted a qualitative walkability assessment of Venice's historic center by utilizing open data from public agencies and on-site observations, revealing that a lack of essential services, tourist crowds, and insufficient signage affect walkability [38].…”
