Validation of Total Daily Energy Expenditure Calculated with Actiheart against Doubly Labeled Water Method in Costa Rican Schoolchildren

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to use the measurement of the PAEE taken from Actiheart in order to calculate the TEE in Costa Rican schoolchildren, and at the same time, to determine the effectiveness when it is compared against the TEE obtained by the DLW. A total of sixteen male schoolchildren were measured for their total daily energy expenditure (TEE) with the doubly labeled water (DLW) technique. The TEE obtained by the Actiheart monitor was calculated and validated against the DWL. The TEE was obtained ad… Show more

“…The Actiheart has been previously validated against doubly labeled water ( 54 , 55 ), a gold standard for the assessment of TEE in free-living conditions. The monitor was fitted to the chest with the use of 2 electrocardiogram electrodes (SP-50, 50 mm round; Pulse Medical) for attachment.…”

“…The sample size was 15 in a study by St-Onge et al [ 21 ], which used the DLW method to assess energy balance during periods of short and habitual sleep in normal-weight men and women. Another study conducted by Zamora-Salas et al [ 22 ] on the validation of total daily energy expenditure calculated with Actiheart using the DLW method in Costa Rican schoolchildren, the number of subjects was 16. In another study by Santos et al [ 18 ], the DLW method was used to assess 7-day TEE in 12 subjects (four male and eight female elite junior basketball players) aged 16-17 years.…”
