The present study aimed to investigate the impact of practicing sports activities on manual skills, focused on reaction time depending on manual laterality. The objectives of the study were to identify the differences in improving simple, optional, and cognitive reaction times in the manual executions of student athletes who practice team sports involving the manual handling of the ball (volleyball, basketball, handball) in comparison with student athletes who practice individual sports and with non-athletic students; to identify the differences regarding the reaction time of the right- and left-handed executions depending on the manual lateralization of the subjects (right- and left-handedness) between the three experimental samples: team sports group (TSG), individual sports group (ISG), and the group of non-athletes (NAG) through the use of computer tests. The study included 335 subjects who were divided into three groups: TSG with 102 subjects, ISG with 112 subjects, and NAG with 121 subjects. The subjects of the study were given five computer tests to evaluate three types of reaction time: simple reaction time (Start/Stop Test), choice reaction time (Check Boxes Test, Hit-the-dot Test), and time of cognitive reaction (Trail making Test part A and B). The results were analyzed regarding right- and left-handedness, as well as the execution hand (right hand or left hand) in solving the tests. The results of the study highlighted significant statistical differences between the three groups: TSG, ISG, and NAG. The best results were recorded by TSG in all tests, and the lowest by NAG. Statistically significant differences were also recorded between the executions with the dominant hand compared to the executions with the non-dominant hand in relation to right- and left-handedness. The study highlighted that the smallest differences in all the study groups were recorded in the simple reaction time test, where the differences between the right-handed and left-handed executions were the lowest, reflecting the best level of symmetrization of the motor executions.

Interpersonal Behaviors Questionnaire in Sport: Psychometric Analysis With Romanian Professional Athletes

Building upon self-determination theory, our objective in this research was to adapt and analyze psychometrically the Interpersonal Behaviors Questionnaire (IBQ) in sport. Our participants were 642 professional athletes (55.14% men, M age = 22.81) who completed an online survey measuring their perception of coaching behaviors, need satisfaction, need frustration, and motivation. The results showed a good fit for the 24-item IBQ with a six-factor correlated model (χ2/ df = 4.178; CFI = .925; TLI = .912; SRMR = .048; RMSEA = .070), and we obtained evidence supporting its convergent and discriminant validity. The analyses also underpinned measurement invariance across gender, age, and sport, and confirmed good reliability. Criterion validity was met by positive associations of autonomy-supportive, competence-supportive, and relatedness-supportive behaviors with need satisfaction and autonomous motivation; and of autonomy-thwarting, competence-thwarting and relatedness-thwarting behaviors with need frustration, controlled motivation and amotivation. The adapted IBQ can be applied to the assessment of professional Romanian athletes’ perceptions of need-supportive and need-thwarting coaching behaviors.

Objective: The aim of this research is to determine the effect of combined feedback and verbal encouragement on anaerobic performance, technical and physiological aspects during small-sided Basketball games for adolescent schoolgirls. Material and Methods: Sixty schoolgirls were divided into 3 groups of 20 girls: control group (G1) (mean ± standard deviation (M±SD); age:15.45 ± 0.41years), verbal encouragement group (G2) (M±SD; age:15.65 ± 0.61years) and combined feedback and verbal encouragement group (G3) (M±SD; age:15.55 ± 0.51 years). Muscle power (countermovement jump (CMJ); 5-Jump-Test (5JT)), agility (Illinois-test), sprint speed (10 and 30 m)]; technical skill and heart rate (HR) responses during 3 vs. 3 small sided basketball game (SSBG) were measured. Additionally, HR was continuously recorded and video analysis was used to quantify technical actions during SSBG. Results: The results showed greater improvements in muscle power of CMJ and 5JT for G3 compared to G2 (P<0.001, ES=1.21, moderate, p<0.001, ES= 4.74, large, respectively) and for G3 compared to G1 (P<0.001, ES= 1.72 large; p=0.001, ES =6.86 large respectively). The time in the 10 m, 30 m sprints and agility decreased more profoundly for G3 compared to G2 (p<0.001, ES=4.93, large; p<0.001, ES=3.27, large, p<0.001, ES=1.14, large, respectively).For technical skill, the ball contacts, successful balls, number of shots and successful shots were higher in G2compared with G1 (p<0.001, ES=1.48 moderate; p<0.001, ES=3.83, large; p<0.001, ES=1.99, large; p=0.001, ES=2.41, large respectively), higher in G3 compared with G2 (p<0.001,ES=-0.89, large, p=0.001, ES=-1.48 moderate; p=0.001, ES= 3.97, large; p<0.001, ES=4.93, large, respectively). Furthermore, average heart rate was higher in G3 compared with G2 and G1 (p<0.001, ES = 1.06, large; p<0.001, ES=4.64, large, respectively). Conclusion: These findings indicate that the combination of feedback and verbal encouragement are more effective for achieving better results in physical fitness and technical skill than verbal encouragement group and control group.
