Validity and reliability of an adapted arabic version of the long international physical activity questionnaire

Abstract: BackgroundThe International Physical Actvity Questionnaire (IPAQ) is a validated tool for physical activity assessment used in many countries however no Arabic version of the long-form of this questionnaire exists to this date. Hence, the aim of this study was to cross-culturally adapt and validate an Arabic version of the long International Physical Activity Questionnaire (AIPAQ) equivalent to the French version (F-IPAQ) in a Lebanese population.MethodsThe guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation provided by … Show more

“…Cultural adaptation of IPAQ-L in Nigeria among adult population revealed similarly good evidence of test-retest reliability with > 0.75 ICC except domestic PA (ICC = 0.38), limiting the validity of context specific PA behaviours [ 42 ]. Arabic version also showed a test-retest reliability > 0.70 ICC regarding overall score [ 29 ].…”

“…To measure the internal consistency reliability Cronbach Alpha was calculated. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used for test retest reliability analysis of the IPAQ where above 0.750 means good reliability, 0.500–0.750 moderate reliability and lower means poor reliability [ 29 ]. The statistical analysis were performed using IBM SPSS 22.0, confidence interval of 95% was used, and p value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.…”

“…In addition, our PA measure was unspecific with respect to the type, intensity, and purpose of these activities. The use of more specific measures like the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (Helou et al, 2018) in future population based studies in Qatar would allow for detailed benchmarking of PA levels among adolescents and youth in this context as well as across-cultural comparability and generalizability of findings. The self-efficacy measure was not specific to PA.…”

“…However, as with the study of human behaviour, the patterns of physical activity behaviour and the accuracy of self-report may be influenced by gender, cultural or ethnic backgrounds. Thus, it is important for researchers to use valid and reliable instrument for each population, and many researchers have adapted established questionnaire to be used in their population [11][12][13][14][15]. Testing the validity and reliability of a modified PAQ-A for the Malaysian population will allow researchers to have a comparable self-report instrument in which to measure physical activity among adolescents.…”
