Validity and Reliability of the Turkish Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) Questionnaire

Abstract: These findings demonstrated that the Turkish translation is equivalent to the English version of MIDAS in terms of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and validity. Physicians can reliably use the Turkish translation of the MIDAS questionnaire in defining the severity of illness and its treatment strategy when applied as a self-administered report by migraine patients themselves.

“…Validated Turkish version of MIDAS (MIgraine Disability ASsessment) questionnaire was given to the subjects to evaluate the socio-economical impact of this headache for the last 3 month period (Stewart et al 1999a, b;Ertas et al 2004). The MIDAS is used to assign a disability grade indicating overall intensity of illness during a 3-month recall period; grade I (minimal or infrequent disability, score 0-5); grade II (mild or infrequent disability, score 6-10); grade III (moderate disability, score 11-20); and grade IV (severe disability, score 21.…”

“…Despite the fact that many tools have been developed to evaluate disability, one of the most widely used scales for this purpose is the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS) (5). The ratio of the cases in which migraine leads to average and severe levels of functionality loss have been found not to be relative to sex, age, income, urban/ rural settlement, or region of residence (6).…”

“…2 The Turkish version of MIDAS showed a highly positive correlation between the physician and the patient, and the applied total MIDAS scores in three visits (R=0.87, 0.83, and 0.90, respectively, p<0.001). Internal consistency of MIDAS was found to show acceptable (>0.7) or excellent (>0.8) levels in both patient and physician applied MIDAS scores, respectively.…”

“…2 Studies show that the severity of the disease is assessed most efficiently by knowing the grade of the disability of the patient, and that disability scoring is the basis for physicians to define treatment needs and strategies. 3 To determine the grade of disability caused by migraine, a specific scale, the Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) questionnaire has been developed.…”
