Objective The current study aimed to identify the most statistically appropriate short‐form of the UCLA‐Loneliness Scale (LS). This was intended to provide researchers and practitioners with a measure that reduces the burden on participants and measures a unidimensional model of loneliness in accordance with the theory proposed by Russell. Method Eight short‐forms of the UCLA‐LS were assessed in two undergraduate samples (N = 552, 206). Students were from a metropolitan Australian university and completed online surveys. Results One‐, two‐, and three‐factor (i.e., an overall loneliness factor, and two method factors representing positively and negatively scored items) models of the original 20‐item UCLA‐LS provided poor model fit. One 10‐item short‐form provided adequate model fit in both samples. However, all configurations of the measure were generally internally consistent and displayed convergent validity. Greater loneliness was significantly associated with reduced social wellbeing, positive affect, life satisfaction, vitality, and psychological wellbeing, and increased negative affect. Conclusions It is recommended that a 10‐item short‐form is used in future applications. This short‐form displayed similar internal consistency and convergent validity as the 20‐item measure despite being half as long, and provided superior model fit.

A real-time survey on the psychological impact of mild lockdown for COVID-19 in the Japanese population

To deter the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), many countries have imposed a lockdown with restrictions. On 7 April 2020, the Japanese government declared a state of emergency over the COVID-19 outbreak. Japan was in “mild lockdown” which was not enforceable and non-punitive with the declaration. We conducted an online survey to investigate factors associated with psychological distress in the “mild lockdown” under a declared state of emergency for COVID-19. We collected data on 11,333 inhabitants (52.4% women, 46.3 ± 14.6 years) living in the seven prefectures where the declaration was first applied. The investigation dates of this study, 11 and 12 May 2020, were in the final phase of the state of emergency. The survey was conducted in real-time to minimize participants’ recall bias. In addition to psychological inventories often used worldwide, the questionnaires used in this survey included lifestyle and stress management items related to COVID-19 and various socio-demographic items including occupation (e.g. healthcare worker) or income.

Psychometric analysis of the short-form UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS-6) among Palestinian university students

The purpose of this research was to analyze the psychometric characteristics of the short-form UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS-6) among Palestinian university students. The sample consisted of 288 university students (56% women and 44% men), aged 18-22 years. The psychometric characteristics of the ULS-6 were examined using confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and criterion-related validity methods. The unidimensionality of the ULS-6 was supported among Palestinian university students. The ULS-6 showed good psychometric characteristics, with adequate internal consistency. In addition, the ULS-6 was negatively correlated with significant others support, family support, friends support, self-esteem and satisfaction with life. The results of the present study suggested that the Arabic version of the ULS-6 constitutes a concise psychometrically sound tool to assess loneliness.
