Validity and Reproducibility of a Self-Administered Food Frequency Questionnaire for the Assessment of Sugar Intake in Middle-Aged Japanese Adults

Abstract: We evaluated the validity and reproducibility of estimated sugar intakes using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) among middle-aged Japanese adults in the Japan Public Health Centre-Based Prospective (JPHC) study. In subsamples of the JPHC study (Cohorts I and II in multiple areas), we computed Spearman’s correlations of FFQ results with urine sugar concentrations and dietary records (DR) for validity; we evaluated correlations between two FFQs for reproducibility. During 1994–1998, participants (Cohort I: n… Show more

“…Third, sugar intake and other dietary factors were self‐reported by FFQ and might therefore have suffered from a degree of nondifferential misclassification. Against this, however, our earlier study showed moderate validity and reproducibility for sugar intake 41 . Fourth, high‐risk groups such as obese individuals might reduce their sugar intake intentionally or underreport their intake 56 .…”

“…Spearman’s correlation coefficients of the energy‐adjusted total sugars intake between the FFQ and DR for men and women were 0.52 and 0.36 (Cohort I) and 0.56 and 0.38 (Cohort II), respectively. Similarly, Spearman’s correlation coefficients of starch intake between the FFQ and DR for men and women were 0.42 and 0.44 (Cohort I) and 0.55 and 0.39 (Cohort II), respectively 41 …”

“…After consensus by the experts' panel, the reproducibility analysis (essential to determine the reliability of the instrument) [26,27] and the internal consistency (indicating if all parts of a tool evaluate the same features) [28,29] were performed.…”

“…We there-fore suggest that the BTR is a useful parameter for predicting the development of cognitive problems similar to MHE. The FFQ have been used in nutritional epidemiological studies to investigate the association between food and chronic diseases (38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44). Evaluating the dietary intake helps physicians and dieticians understand poor food habits, dietary choice, and excessive consumption.…”
