Validity of 2 Sleep Quality Items to Be Used in a Large Cohort Study of Kidney Transplant Recipients

Abstract: For kidney transplant patients, validity is strong for the psychosocial questionnaire's sleep quality item, but the mixed findings regarding the validity of the daytime functioning item suggest that additional items are needed to measure daytime functioning.

“…The fit of the three-factor model was confirmed in subsequent studies on samples of Australian adults aged 18 to 59 years (Magee, Caputi, Iverson, & Huang, 2008), renal transplant recipients (Burkhalter et al, 2011), and patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (Mariman, Vogelaers, Hanoulle, Delesie, & Pevernagie, 2012). Although Magee et al (2008) found the three-factor model to have a superior fit compared with the one-factor model, they favored a two-factor model.…”

“…The most common sleep disorders in hemodialysis patients are insomnia, restless legs syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, and snoring . In our RTx group, we found a 30.7% prevalence of poor sleep quality and a 34.1% prevalence of poor daytime functioning in the last four wk . RTx recipients commonly also suffer from other sleep disorders, such as chronic insomnia (8%), poor sleep quality (30–34%), obstructive sleep apnea (27%), restless legs syndrome (4.5%) , and periodic limb movement .…”

“…On the STCS‐DS, study participants rated their DS over the past four wk on a scale of 0 (no sleepiness) to 10 (extreme sleepiness). Its item response format was made congruent with the STCS sleep quality item . Primary evidence supporting the validity of the STCS‐DS has been developed by our research group .…”

“…Sleep-wake disturbances (SWD) are prevalent in renal transplant recipients (RTx) [1]: 49% report poor sleep quality [2,3], 34.1% poor daytime functioning [2] and 51% daytime sleepiness [3]. Other relevant indicators of sleep issues in this population are insomnia (inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep as long as desired), with a preva-lence of 8% [4], restless legs syndrome (neurological disorder) 4.5% [5] and obstructive sleep apnoea 27% [6].…”
