Validity of an inertial measurement unit to assess pelvic orientation angles during gait, sit–stand transfers and step-up transfers: Comparison with an optoelectronic motion capture system*

Abstract: An inertial measurement unit (IMU) allows kinematic evaluation of human motion with fewer operational constraints than a gold standard optoelectronic motion capture (MOCAP) system. The study's aim was to compare IMU and MOCAP measurements of dynamic pelvic orientation angles during different activities of daily life (ADL): gait, sit-to-stand (STS) transfers and block step-up (BS) transfers. A single IMU was attached onto the lower back in seventeen healthy participants (8F/9 M, age 19-31 years; BMI < 25) and o… Show more

“…In a classic way [37][38][39], we have previously used Bland and Altman's method to evaluate the agreement between DYSKIMOT and Elite [40]. It appeared that the Bland and Altman's plots did not show a trend with the mean values of the measurements.…”

“…Daily activity will be measured over 7 days with tri-axial accelerometers [39, 40]. Two performance-based measures, the 6-minute walk test [41, 42] and sit to stand on 30 s [4345] will be assessed to measure Physical function.…”

“…Sensor fusion algorithms provide the sensor interaction and complementary information (El-Gohary and McNames, 2012). IMUs are employed in many applications, such as timed-up and go tests (Coulthard et al, 2015), sit-stand and step-up transfer tests (Bolink et al, 2016), evaluation of kinematics and the capacity of post-stroke patients to grasp objects (Braidot et al, 2013). However, it presents high sensitivity with magnetic field interferences and need frequent calibration (El-Gohary and McNames, 2012).…”
