Validity of original studies in health technology assessment reports: Significance of standardized assessment and reporting

Abstract: The results of this study may be important for any institution that prepares recommendations for policy-makers. In the case of HTA reports, no new checklists are necessary as the checklist offered by the INAHTA contains the needed information. It may be necessary, however, to consider an "intramural quality board," which helps the member organizations guarantee both the transparency of the original studies included in HTA reports and the transparency of the HTA report itself.

“…Although the importance of these summary reports is generally accepted, one must keep in mind that there exist qualitative differences among these reports. If the quality of scientific papers which are summarized in HTA reports reveals errors and these are not mentioned in the HTA report [42], a major pillar of our decision-making processes could become instable. The compilation of complex data with scientific methods does not necessarily increase the reliability of their statements.…”

“…Despite measuring different things, both instruments recognized the serious weakness of the appraised key publications. Second, despite the weakness mentioned in the core parts of the HTA reports, which are read by scientists, the authors of both reports recommended the use of the procedure in the summaries of their HTA reports, which are read by policy makers (Porzsolt 2005). This asymmetric distribution of information generates problems.…”

“…Wir haben mit unserer Erweiterung des klassischen Fünf-Schritt-Modells von Sackett et al auf ein Sechs-Schritt-Mobut to convince critical members of society with additional data which have been obtained under everyday conditions. andere Aussagen zu finden sind als innerhalb desselben HTA Report, der von Wissenschaftlern gelesen und verwendet wird[25]. Diese Art vermeidbarer Fehler belastet das Vertrauen in evidenzbasierte Aussagen.…”
