Validity of Self‐Reported Pre‐Pregnancy Weight and Body Mass Index Classification in an Integrated Health Care Delivery System

Abstract: Despite misclassification, self-reported and measured pre-pregnancy weights were similarly associated with perinatal outcomes in this study population. Our results illustrate the value of the EHR for recording measured pre-pregnancy weight for use in research.

“…Third, the included studies displayed a broad heterogeneity in terms of exposure and outcome assessments and had several methodological limitations. The exposure (MPBW) was mainly self‐reported, which implies a certain risk of underreporting (Gorber, Tremblay, Moher, & Gorber, ; Han, Abrams, Sridhar, Xu, & Hedderson, ); however, self‐reported and measured weight showed a high correlation ( r = .96 [Iii, Paulet, & Rajpura, ], r = .95 [Mamun et al, ]). In addition, no study defined the time frame for the ascertainment of “prepregnancy.” Measurement of BP varied and was not consistently performed according to recommended guidelines (Lurbe et al, ; Makatsariya, Akinshina, Bitsadze, & Khizroeva, ).…”

“…Efeitos totais, indiretos e diretos padronizados do modelo de equações estruturais utilizando a retenção de peso pós-parto como variável resposta na fiabilidade das informações relatadas do peso pré-gestacional, estudos demonstraram alta correlação entre o peso pré-gestacional medido e o autorreferido ao compararem as duas medidas, aumentando, assim, a coerência das medidas reportadas 47,48 . Em resumo, os resultados mostraram que o GPG apresentou efeito positivo de alta magnitude na RPPP.…”

“…25 This study uses data from the largest RCT to our knowledge that includes cotinine-validated smoking cessation. 27,28 Although self-report has been shown to be acceptable when clinical measurements at conception are unobtainable, 29,30 errors in self-reported weight could have biased our calculated gestational weight gain estimates. However, this study also has several limitations.…”
