Validity of the 12-item French version of the Tobacco Craving Questionnaire in treatment-seeking smokers

Abstract: Findings suggest that the FTCQ-12 measures the same four factors as the FTCQ and TCQ, and these four constructs have unique properties. The FTCQ-12 yields valid and reliable indices of tobacco craving and has potential clinical utility for rapid assessment of tobacco craving in smokers seeking treatment.

“…The FTCQ-12 and MNWS have established construct validity in French smokers. 27,29 In the current investigation, Cronbach's alpha for the general craving score and total withdrawal score was respectively, 0.74 and 0.77. Craving and withdrawal are ordinarily most prominent during the first 2 weeks of quitting 30 ; thus, we evaluated the incidence of smoking 2 weeks after the quit date (abstinent = 0, smoking = 1), which was verified by breath carbon monoxide (≤ 8 parts per million; Smokeanalyzer, Bedfont Scientific Ltd, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom).…”

“…6 Conceivably, the modest correlations between MNWS withdrawal might be attributable to general symptoms of unease (eg, sadness/anxiety) as opposed to nicotine withdrawal. Nevertheless, FTCQ-12 craving and MNWS withdrawal are also strongly correlated at baseline in treatment seekers, 27 and pregnant smokers have elevated levels of craving and withdrawal prior to smoking cessation. 47,48 As stated by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) Subcommittee on Biochemical Verification of tobacco use and cessation, "cotinine appears to be the best marker to gauge the severity of dependence".…”

“…Both studies were approved by the Ethics Committee of the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris, France. (Berlin et al, 2010) and the French version of the Minnesota Nicotine Withdrawal Scale (MNWS; Hughes andHatsukami, 1986, 1998). The FTCQ-12 is a valid and reliable 12-item self-report instrument that assesses four dimensions of tobacco craving (Factors 1-4: Emotionality, Expectancy, Compulsivity, Purposefulness).…”

“…Abbreviated versions exist [e. g., the 10-item Questionnaire of Smoking Urges (QSU-brief; Cox et al, 2001) and 12-item Tobacco Craving Questionnaire (TCQ-12;Heishman et al, 2008)], but the methodological complexity of multifactorial scales often yields a complicated interpretation of the clinical To facilitate translational research for relapse prevention in smoking cessation, we have developed an in-treatment screening procedure based on weekly craving assessments of a general sample of male and female French smokers (Berlin et al, 2013). This research demonstrated that a risk score (RS) derived from the brief French Tobacco Craving Questionnaire (FTCQ-12; Berlin et al, 2010) Factor 2 (Expectancy) plus Factor 4 (Purposefulness) was a robust predictor of smoking within 1-8 weeks after enrollment in a smoking cessation trial using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). The FTCQ-12 RS was a better predictor than the single craving item assessed using a French translation of the Minnesota Nicotine Withdrawal Scale (MNWS; Hughes andHatsukami, 1986, 1998), whereas MNWS craving was a better predictor of abstinence.…”
