Validity of the six stages of change for exercise

Abstract: We examined the validity of 'Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change' six stages in exercise domain. A paper-pencil survey was completed by 457 workers. Self-efficacy tended to increase from Precontemplation to Action, did not change from Action to Maintenance, and then increase from Maintenance to Termination. Pros tended to increase and cons decrease only from Precontemplation to Action. A follow-up survey was completed by 331 workers. More preparers (25.4%) moved to Action compared to precontemplator (3.8… Show more

“…In particular, the “exercise stage of change” of cancer patients and the intention to operate a health-changing behaviour are significant predictor of exercise adherence [ 240 ]. The exercise stages of change derive from the transtheoretical model of behaviour change (TTM, a widespread model to explain personal behavioural change) applied to regular exercise and analyses change as a progression through six different stages [ 241 ].…”

“…An employee's stage of readiness to change has been found to predict physical activity levels (Bezyak, Berven, & Chan, 2011;Horiuchi, Tsuda, Watanabe, Fukamachi, & Samejima, 2012;Rosenkranz et al, 2015). For example, the likelihood of employees signing up for a workplace physical activity challenge was 1.64 times higher for those in the preparation stage versus the precontemplation and contemplation stages and 1.98 times higher for those in the action/maintenance stages (Walker, Tullar, Taylor, Roman, & Amick, 2016).…”

“…Next we evaluate the patient's stage of change. The Stages of Change model describes patients' behavior regarding addiction and has been validated for use in physical activity counseling [57,58]. The model describes 6 stages: precontemplation (not intending to exercise), contemplation (planning to exercise in the next 6 months), preparation (exercising less than the recommended amount), action (meeting the exercise goal for less than 6 months), maintenance (exercising more than 6 months), and relapse (slipping to earlier stage).…”
