Show more

“…Wheat bran, a wheat processing by-product, is a viable option (Wesendonck et al, 2013) due to the availability of the product. However, being a feed rich in insoluble fiber (Esposito et al, 2005), its use at high concentrations could interfere with voluntary intake (Mariz et al, 2013) as a result of an increased retention in the rumen and lower passage rates.…”

“…Tavernari et al (2010) reported that variations in metabolizable energy values for birds fed high-fiber cereal-based diets are directly related to the digesta passage rate and utilization of nutrients absorbed especially in the small intestine through crypts and villi. Wesendonck et al (2013) complement by stating that the inclusion of high fiber ingredients in diets for monogastric animals causes significant changes in the digestive metabolism of poultry, affecting from voluntary feed intake to nutrient utilization by metabolism.…”

“…As the avoidance behavior was independent of the composition of the wastes, it was not influenced by the composition of the diets supplied to the pigs. The change in the diet composition with the inclusion of wheat, although performed as a strategy to reduce costs, also promotes improvements related to feeding, digestion and nutritional use of food by pigs during the postweaning period (SCHOLTEN et al, 2002;WESENDONCK et al, 2013). This practice is also justified by the reduction of the need for corn and soybean by the swine chain (ABCS, 2016).…”

“…Along with that, the economic/environmental pressures to reduce the cost of production and reduce the excretion of nutrients are major challenges in industrial swine farming (GILBERT et al, 2017). This has stimulated the use and study of food alternatives to corn and soybean in swine diets (FLOROU-PANERI et al, 2014) by less common components such as dual-purpose wheat (WESENDONCK et al, 2013;QUATRIN et al, 2017).…”
