Value of CRP, PCT, and NLR in Prediction of Severity and Prognosis of Patients With Bloodstream Infections and Sepsis

Abstract: ObjectiveTo investigate the value of C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in assessing the severity of disease in patients with bloodstream infection and sepsis, and to analyze the relationship between the levels of three inflammatory factors and the prognosis of patients.MethodsThe clinical data of 146 patients with bloodstream infection and sepsis admitted to our intensive care unit (ICU) from October 2016 to May 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The diffe… Show more

“…Another study (28) indicated that NLR is increased in sepsis patients and is significantly correlated with sepsis severity evaluated by the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score. The same study (28) indicated that NLR plays a role in prediction of severity and prognosis of patients with bloodstream infections (29) and is also predictive of a worse outcome of severe acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) in frequent exacerbators with a cutoff value of 10.23 (30). In our study, we discovered that compared with the non-DVT group, the MVT and LOS were longer in the DVT group, moreover, the NLR level was positively related with MVT (r=0.36; P<0.001) and LOS (r=0.452; P<0.0001).…”

“…NLR is a cheap, simple, rapid and easily available in ammation-related parameter. It has been con rmed that NLR had a high sensitivity for the diagnosis and strati cation of sepsis with a good predictive and prognostic value in sepsis [33][34][35].…”

“…C-reactive protein levels have been of great clinical interest for early diagnosis of infection and monitoring its treatment response as they are easily measured and related to the severity of the systemic inflammatory response [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]. The results of the present study show a higher plasma concentration of CRP, peaking on day 1, but there was no significant correlation between the H 2 S and SP concentrations in either the urinary tract infection or abdominal infection group, although this may become apparent in a larger cohort.…”
