Value of risk scores in the decision to palliate patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm

Abstract: BackgroundThe aim of this study was to develop a 48‐h mortality risk score, which included morphology data, for patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm presenting to an emergency department, and to assess its predictive accuracy and clinical effectiveness in triaging patients to immediate aneurysm repair, transfer or palliative care.MethodsData from patients in the IMPROVE (Immediate Management of the Patient With Ruptured Aneurysm: Open Versus Endovascular Repair) randomized trial were used to develo… Show more

“…In addition, only a few tools were validated externally 7 . It is an unfortunately common occurrence in the medical literature for outcome-prediction tools to be developed and not validated subsequently in an independent cohort 8 or found to be inaccurate in patient populations other than the development population 9 .…”

“…The various models of mortality prediction in hospital after elective cardiac surgery, including logistic regression model and a machine learning model, were compared by using ROC and DCA. In Sweeting et al, 15 data from patients in the IMPROVE (Immediate Management of the Patient With Ruptured Aneurysm: Open Versus Endovascular Repair) randomized trial were used to develop the risk score of ruptured aneurysm. Risk factors included age, sex, haemodynamic markers, and aortic morphology.…”
