Value of Routine Renal and Abdominal Ultrasonography in Patients Undergoing Prostatectomy

Abstract: The study shows that a sizeable number of patients (44%) had urological and non-urological conditions detected by renal and abdominal ultrasonography. Most patients had benign conditions but three of these patients had potentially life threatening conditions (renal, bladder and hepatic carcinoma) detected by sonography that were unrelated to the prostate. However, in only one patient (0.4%) with bladder carcinoma, surgery for prostate was postponed and bladder tumour was dealt with prior to transurethral resec… Show more

“…(10) It may be postulated that there is a direct link between these conditions. Earlier studies referred to above shows (3,4) approximately 3% -4% of patients with prostatomegaly having incidentally detected cholelithiasis. Our study shows a rate of 18.9% of patients sharing both diagnoses.…”

“…Few articles exist in published literature regarding the association of cholelithiasis with prostatic enlargement. (2)(3)(4) Gallstones and prostatomegaly share common risk factors namely advancing age, obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes, and genetic predisposition. (5)(6)(7)(8)(9) Our evaluation showed comparable rates of co-morbidities in patients compared to a large Asian multinational study.…”

“…Via renal duration and cortical thickness, renal function can also be measured, and significant therapeutic decisions can be taken on the basis of this. Serial sonographic tests are also carried out to assess the severity or normality of renal disease [3] . While renal parenchymal volume is a reasonably reliable calculation in patients with end-stage renal disease, in normal patients, longitudinal renal length measurements are adequate.…”
