Value of VLCD supplementation with medium chain triglycerides

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) are energetically less dense, highly ketogenic, and more easily oxidised than long chain triglycerides (LCT). MCT also differ from LCT in their digestive and metabolic pathways. OBJECTIVE: To test the effects of MCT supplementation during a very low calorie diet (VLCD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Three groups of tightly matched obese women with body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg=m 2 received an isoenergetic (578.5 kcal) VLCD (Adinax 1 , Novo Vital, Sweden) enriched with MCT o… Show more

“…Previously, Krotkiewski conducted a very-low-calorie diet (578.5 kcal/day) with LCT or MCT (8.0 and 9.9 g) in 66 obese women with BMI ≥ 30 kg/m 2 . He concluded that replacement of LCT by MCT in the very-low-calorie diet suppressed body fat accumulation (23). However, the effect on visceral fat was not investigated in his study.…”

“…After 4 weeks of the control diet, also with 40 en% fat (of which 75% was olive oil), these significant differences in the named parameters compared with baseline were no longer present [42] (LOE Ib). However, the advantages related to energy balance were already no longer able to be verified by adaptation mechanisms in the 2nd-4th week of application [43,44] (LOE Ib). As MCT lead to intolerances in larger quantities (>60 g/day), a maximum of 80-120 kcal can be saved per day through the use of MCT.…”

“…In a different context to that of a high-fat diet and an animal model, Krotkiewski [20], investigating the effect of supplementation with MCT, detected a reduction in body weight in the first 2 weeks of treatment of adult women in comparison with the control group, a difference that disappeared in the final phase of the study.…”
