(Value, Risk)-based Performance Evaluation of Manufacturing Processes

Abstract: A value/risk -based performance evaluation framework is proposed in the context of manufacturing processes at the industrialization phase of product development. Various risk factors of the manufacturing process are identified through Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and then embedded in the process plan models. Modelling and simulation are then employed for determining the value a process plan can create and the risk it is exposed to. Alternative scenarios are developed, simulated and compared with a r… Show more

“…Goswami and Tiwari (2014) formulated the problem of concept design selection as a risk mitigation decision that affects the likelihood of meeting targets for cost-effectiveness, reliability, and delivery time. Shah et al (2012) used risk (expected costs due to failures) and value (performance) as criteria in a multi-attribute decision-making approach for selecting a manufacturing process during product development. Aven (2013) suggested robust decision making and adaptive risk analysis as strategies to manage risks with deep uncertainty (mentioned in Section 3).…”

“…Zhang et al [28] proposed a fuzzy evaluation method for the purifying procedure of zinc hydrometallurgy, the potential and trend of redox were evaluated by it, and an expert control strategy based on process evaluation was designed. Shah et al [29] studied a value/risk-based performance evaluation framework for the industrial manufacturing process. Various risk factors for the manufacturing process, which were embedded in the process planning model, were determined by failure modes and effects analysis.…”
