Values of alkaline phosphathase and their isoenzyme profiles in patients with cancer in respect to bone and liver metastasis

Abstract: Background: Alkaline phosphatase is a glycoprotein that catalyzes two kinds of chemical reactions: hydrolysis of phosphorus ester breaking P-O bonds and phospho-transfer reactions in which phosphoric group is transferred to an acceptor molecule. In the human body, ALP exists in multiple molecular forms whose heterogeneity is partly due to genetic factors and partly to posttranslational modifications. The aim was to evaluate a total ALP activity and its isoforms in cancer patients with bone and liver meta… Show more

“…Overall, in terms of lung cancer, the ALP activity is increased validating feasibility for a wider application of this parameter. [38] The review of the LDH activity has shown that neuroendocrine tumors are described with the increased activity of this enzyme, while squamous cell lung cancer with the decreased one ( Table 2). In a number of papers, it is shown that the high level of LDH in small-cell lung cancer is an unfavorable prognostic sign associated with a low response to an administered therapy, [39] similar results have been obtained for adenocarcinoma.…”

“…ALP is widely expressed in various organs, including the liver, kidney, placenta and bone (33,34). ALP serves an important role in bone formation and remodeling through promoting mineralization of the matrix (35).…”

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that activation of ERK is important for H 2 O 2 -induced apoptosis in cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells and osteoblasts (40)(41)(42). H 2 O 2 treatment increased Bax expression and led to hyperpolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential in MC3T3-E1 mouse osteoblastic cells (33). This effect was prevented by treating cells with an inhibitor of the ERK upstream kinase mitogen activated protein kinase kinase1/2 (PD98059) (43).…”

“…The activity of ALP was calculated with molar extinction coefficient, and results of the enzyme activity were given in the international units (IUs). [6] The normal range is 20-140 IU/L. [7]…”
