Valuing Health State: An EQ-5D-5L Value Set for Ethiopians

Abstract: There is a growing interest in Health Technology Assessment and economic evaluation in lowresource setting such as Ethiopia. The study developed a value set for EQ-5D-5L using an Ethiopian general population sample with the EuroQol Group-Portable Valuation Technology (EQ-PVT) protocol administered in Amharic. The new value set provides local users with societal preferences that are relevant. The study also established the feasibility of using the less resource-intensive EQ-PVT which is relevant for future stud… Show more

“…Egypt had the largest percentage (41%) of cTTO observations considered to be WTD compared with other countries such as Taiwan (38.5%) [42], Hong Kong and Indonesia (36%) [40,46], Japan and Korea (0.1%) [38,45], The Netherlands (2%) [35], China (10%) [36], and Ethiopia (11.7%) [49]. This may be attributed to cultural and social factors as most participants in Egypt preferred to die than to be a burden on family and friends if they had severe illness, as stated in the country-specific questionnaire (publication of detailed questionnaire results is underway).…”

“…Patient’s utility score is obtained using possible (3125) health states of patients with breast cancer defined by the 5 dimensions and disutility coefficient of general population. Thus, it was calculated using the Ethiopian general population utility value set [17]. One caveat in order is the limitation within the analysis where causality of the associations was not confirmed.…”

“…This approach has been used in several national EQ-5D-5L valuation studies. [25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33] The hybrid model will combine the likelihood functions of a linear model for the c-TTO data and a logit model for the DCE data. As the coefficients will be estimated from a conditional logit and expressed on a latent arbitrary utility scale, we will use a rescaled parameter θ, which will assume that the c-TTO model coefficients are proportional to DCE model coefficients.…”
