“…Complete bronchial atresia ultimately developed in six of the seven patients with an associated high mortality reported with five patients dying of respiratory failure; the mean survival after VBIS diagnosis being 25.3 months (range 1-76) and overall survival of 31.1 ± 25.9 months (21). The following year, Kesavan et al (22) reported a slightly higher VBIS incidence of 5.1% (3/59) of patients over a three-yr period. In that cohort, two patients with VBIS required lobectomy, while the other patient underwent early sequential balloon dilatation that resulted in good patency of the airway (22).…”

“…Several treatment procedures including lobectomy, balloon dilatations, bronchoplasty with stent replacement, brachytherapy, electrocautery, and mitomycin application are suggested. [5][6][7] In a case series, Kesavan and associates evaluated 59 lung transplant patients and 3 of them developed VB complications. 6 Two of them underwent a lobectomy and 1 patient underwent sequential balloon dilatation.…”

“…A vanishing bronchus is a known airway complication after lung transplantation that typically is a slow and evolving process rather than an acute emergent situation. [ 1 4 ] We present a case of an acute vanishing left main bronchus occurring rapidly and resulting in hypoxic respiratory failure. The urgent placement of venovenous (VV) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was required for respiratory support in order to perform airway dilation.…”
