Vapor treatment, liquid crystal formation, magnetic orientation, and crystallization (VLMC) to form helical polyisocyanides with oriented crystal‐like structure

Abstract: We describe a four‐step process [solvent vapor treatment, liquid crystal formation, magnetic orientation, and crystallization (VLMC)] for producing oriented helical polyisocyanides with crystal‐like structure. We synthesized a series of ortho‐alkyl groups substituted with poly(phenyl isocyanide), and characterized the polymer structure using polarizing optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. The results demonstrated that the polymer has a crystal‐like structure and the sample f… Show more

“…Chiral molecules may serve as chiral inducers (chiral dopants) to induce CLC (chiral) from nematic liquid crystals (achiral). In this study, we prepare PPI derivatives with branched alkyl chains in CLC and perform molecular orientation in the liquid crystal state with a magnetic field . The Ni complexes can be used for catalysts that are low-cost and convenient to handle compared with the Pd catalysts. Vapor treatment, liquid crystal formation, magnetic orientation, and crystallization (VLMC) reported as an orientation method for PPI involves both formation of lyotropic liquid crystal of PPI by solvent vapor and anisotropic aggregation of PPI by magnetic field.…”
