Vapour pressures and enthalpies of vaporization of a series of the linear n-alkyl acetates

Abstract: Vapour pressures and the molar enthalpies of vaporization D g l H m of the linear aliphatic acetates C 8 -C 16 have been determined by the transpiration method. KovatÕs indices of these compounds were measured by capillary gas-chromatography. A linear correlation of enthalpies of vaporization D g l H m at T = 298.15 K of the acetates studied with the KovatÕs indices as well as with the number of carbon atoms has been found.

“…This paper extends our previous [1][2][3] studies on the aliphatic esters with a systematic study of the cyclic esters d-lactones (d-valerolactone, d-hexanolactone, d-octanolactone, d-nonanolactone, and d-decanolactone). The enthalpies of vaporization, D g l H m , have been obtained from the temperature dependence of the vapour pressures measured by the transpiration method.…”

“…the internal consistency of the experimental results. Vaporization enthalpies g l H m appear to be a linear function of the number of carbon atoms of the n-alkyl acetates [28] and aliphatic nitriles [29]. The plot of g l H m (298.15 K) against the number of Catoms in the methyl n-alkanoates is presented in Fig.…”

“…In the Kováts index n-alkanes serve as the standards eluting before and after the peak of interest. The vaporization enthalpy g l H m appears to be a linear function of the Kováts indices in homologous series of alkanes, alkanols, and alkyl acetates [28,29]. We have used Kováts indices available from the literatures [30,31] in order to test how the results fit into a systematic dependence on the Kováts indices.…”
