Vapour sensing using surface functionalized gold nanoparticles

Abstract: The electrical and optical response of thin films of surface functionalized nanoparticles upon exposure to various chemical vapours has been studied. It was found that the electrical response to chemical vapours adsorbed on the various nanoparticle films varied markedly and was determined by the surface functional groups. Ellipsometric studies revealed that the film thickness increased during exposure to the chemical vapours. These thickness changes of the films correlate with the changes in electrical co… Show more

“…[14] A combination of metal nanoparticles with responsive polymer shells, surface brushes, or multilayered layer-by-layer films was demonstrated to be prospective hybrid structures for sensing applications. [66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75] Thus, hybrid structures, which consist of these two very diverse material components, should be considered as a strong design paradigm for responsive materials and structures.…”

“…The first example of Au-NP based gas-sensor was proposed in 1998 [19], subsequently, other sensing applications of Au-NPs have followed, mainly based on the use of thiol-capped Au-NPs [20][21], and/or with several different functionalities [22]. Self-assembled coatings from Au-NPs and dendrimers [23], gold nano-triangles [24], were investigated, as well.…”
