Variabilities in Childhood Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Incident Diabetes in Adulthood: The Bogalusa Heart Study

Abstract: Although emerging evidence indicates that increased variability in cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) among populations at midlife or later is a reliable predictor of adverse health outcomes, it is unknown whether intraindividual CVRF variability during childhood or adolescence is an independent predictor of later-life diabetes. We aimed to examine the association of CVRF variability during childhood with diabetes in later life. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSWe included 1,718 participants who participated in the… Show more

“…The prevalence of obesity is nearly twice as high in children from low-income versus higher income households (18.9% vs. 10.9%) [ 1 ]. These disparities often persist through the life course as youth with overweight or obesity are more likely to have adult obesity and are at increased risk for developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk factors [ 2 4 ]. Since the majority of American children spend 6 to 7 h per day at school, schools have been a priority setting for addressing disparities in obesity prevalence [ 5 ].…”

“…CKM risk factors in childhood such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes frequently persist into adulthood and are linked to long-term vascular disease. 90,122,123 The Life’s Essential 8 framework provides a holistic approach for attaining and preserving cardiovascular health, 82 with Life’s Essential 8 health metrics of weight, blood pressure, glycemia, and lipids also being components of CKM syndrome. Studies indicate that sustaining healthy lifestyle practices from childhood through young adulthood is critical for maintaining ideal cardiovascular health through middle age.…”

“…Adolescence is the transitional period between childhood and adulthood.Adolescents are considered to be the most important group in the whole population to establish a sustainable and healthy lifestyle to reduce the globe burden of disease after adulthood.Adolescence is a critical period for the adoption and formation of unhealthy lifestyles and behaviors, including smoking and alcohol consumption, sedentary behaviors, drug use,tra c injuries and mental disorders [21,22]. The longer adolescents receive education, the lower their health risks, the slower the transition to marriage and childbirth, and the better their health capabilities.…”
