Variability of post-void residual urine volume in the elderly

Abstract: Residual urine volume, though clinically important as a diagnostic tool, is reported to be variable and unreliable. Variability was examined among 14 geriatric patients, mean age 77 years. Residual urine was measured by ultrasound at three different times of day on each of two visits separated by 2-4 weeks. Results were examined by analysis of variance. Mean residual urine was 154 ml. Between-patient variability was large [standard deviation (SD) 246 ml]. There was no significant difference between values in m… Show more

“…During 24-hour monitoring, residual urine was measured three times, in the afternoon, evening, and early morning, using an ultrasound scanner (Pie Medical 1100). The volume of residual urine given by this method is reproducible except for a diurnal variation, which in this study was averaged out by taking the mean of three observations at di¡erent times of day [Gri¤ths et al, 1996a].…”

“…Post-void residual urine is often elevated among elderly patients [Gri¤ths et al, 1992[Gri¤ths et al, , 1996a, and is one aspect of impaired detrusor contractility. The combination of elevated residual urine with urge incontinence is common [Starer and Libow, 1988;Resnick et al, 1989;Malone-Lee, 1992] and presents a challenging clinical problem, because a large residual urine is a relative contraindication for the use of anticholinergic agents.…”

“…Bladder capacity was considered reduced when it was less than 350 mL (4). Post voiding residue was considered insignificant to 100 mL (5). Normal flow depends on the age and gender: Males < 40 yr > 22 mL/s, 40-60 yr > 18 mL/s e > 60 yr > 13 mL/s.…”

“…Eine erhöhte Restharnmenge kann ein Hinweis auf eine Überlaufinkontinenz oder prostatogene Blasenfunktionsstörung sein und sollten durch eine Verlaufskontrolle bestätigt werden [50]. Signifikant hohe Restharnmengen sollten dem Urologen zur weiteren Betreuung überwiesen werden.…”
