Variable Optical Feedback-Based Behavioral Model of a Self-Mixing Laser Sensor

Abstract: In this paper, a unified behavioral model of laser feedback based self-mixing interferometry (SMI) is proposed which is able to accurately model the SMI sensor signals encountered under experimental variable optical feedback conditions. The model provides correct SMI signals whether feedback is varied in a continuous or discrete manner, while spanning all major feedback regimes (such as weak-, moderate-, and strong-feedback regime) used for sensing applications. As a result, the proposed model allows the simul… Show more

“…We have generated these SMI signals in MATLAB by using the variable C-based SMI simulator [17]. It requires information about remote motion's frequency, peak to peak amplitude, initial phase φ, sampling frequency f s , and variation in C. We have used multiple vibration frequencies for training dataset ranging from 2 Hz to 10 Hz and f s was set to 100 kHz.…”

“…This work was supported in part by ANR-20-CE42-0010 PICSONDE causing variable optical feedback (VOF) [8] and inducing speckle [3] which result in variations in SMI signal characteristics [9]. This task is even more complicated if the SMI signal has low signal to noise ratio (SNR) [10], especially under industrial settings [2], [11].…”

“…Focusing on displacement measurement with large dynamic range, detection of interferometric fringes becomes a challenge This work was supported in part by ANR-20-CE42-0010 PICSONDE especially when the remote target surface is rough thereby causing variable optical feedback (VOF) [8] and inducing speckle [3] which result in variations in SMI signal characteristics [9]. This task is even more complicated if the SMI signal has low signal to noise ratio (SNR) [10], especially under industrial settings [2], [11].…”
